Posted @withregram • @roomtoplay An oldie, and still a favourite with our Kinders. Using paint chips helps our youngest students notice the nuance of colours that exist in our Winter garden. Plus, the names of the colours are fun too! 😎

The Classroom Gardener returned to schools this Fall for in person facilitation! We SO missed our Garden Days with students in the Spring. We are busy pulling weeds that went wild over the summer, planting garlic and tucking the beds in with a warm layer of insulating leaves as mulch.

Posted @withregram • @westcoastseeds Here's our list of seeds to start in August for fall and winter harvests. These fast-growing seeds are cold hardy and will thrive as the nights get cooler in late August and September. ⠀

Check the first average frost date for your area. In the Lower Mainland of BC, the first frost date is not usually until November 2nd. ⠀

Please note some exceptions for the following seeds, peas plant before August 15th and for chives, corn salad, and radishes plant after August 15th. Lastly, for cauliflower start indoors, transplant first week September for fall harvest.⠀

Environmental stewardship may sound like a really big concept to teach, but start small, and students will begin to understand that all life is interconnected. A child that cares about the creatures in their own space, will eventually care about their neighbourhood, city, country, and planet. Place-based learning at its finest.

We are back in the garden! Students at Simon Frase

We are back in the garden! Students at Simon Fraser Elementary are starting seeds in paper pots made with potmakers from @westcoastseeds ! It’s a great way for students to get a head start on some April crops like lettuce, scallions and broccoli. We are also direct seeding kale, radish, arugula and companion flowers like nasturtium and marigolds to keep our school garden pest-free! What are you planting in your school garden?

The Classroom2Communities Conference this weekend was a 2 day whirlwind of connecting with so many passionate environmental educators! It was a super inspiring experience and one that assured us that students are being led in the right direction!
